The Department of Surgery (DOS) at Brigham & Women’s Hospital is recognized as an international center of medical and biomedical research. Under the leadership of the department chair, Dr. Gerard Doherty, and associate chair for Research, Dr. Elizabeth Mittendorf, research in the DOS involves 11 clinical divisions and two centers: the Center for Surgery and Public Health, and the Patient Reported Outcomes, Value, and Experience (PROVE) Center. DOS research spans clinical, basic and translational work and is housed in over 36,000 square feet. The department’s FY20 research revenue was $31.8M, with a diverse funding portfolio including the National Institute of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, along with industry and foundation sponsors.
